Social media optimization (SMO) has become a prevalent part of life for financial advisors. By doing a few simple steps in the background of your social media, you can optimize your socials to stand out amongst other financial professionals. Here is how you can boost your rank and beat the competition:

Step 1: Research

Your first step to success is to research other profiles that do well within your niche. Take note of how they display information, call to action, and interact with users. The key to social media is interaction, so pay attention to how others in your niche get online users to interact with their content.

Here are some specifics to look for:

  • Quality of photos
  • Bios of other firms or advisors
  • Tags used
  • How captions are worded
  • Follower to following ratio

Step 2: Tags

Tagging puts you in the rankings and helps users find your social profiles easier when looking for a business or financial firm. Putting keywords in your tags is best practice, such as #financialadvisor. This helps your audience grow with people that are specifically looking for you and others like you. Scroll through the others within these tags and see what you are compared to by users. Here are some popular tags for financial professionals:

  • #financialadvisor
  • #retirement
  • #financial
  • #financialfreedom

Step 3: Quality of Content

Having showstopping photos can really do wonders for your social media game. Optimizing your social includes the content that is posted as well. The more concise your captions are and the better your content is- the more viewers will interact with your profile. We’ve talked before about different types of content, but here’s a simple refresher:

  • Photos
  • Videos
  • Infographics

These three categories of media should be the “meat and potatoes” of your profile.

Step 4: Localization

Localizing your profile will help you find more local users to interact with. Rep your city proudly by boosting events, posting photos and videos of the city you live in, and making content local specific on occasion. Maybe make a post about a community event you’re attending or spread awareness of resources in your city for future clientele. The possibilities are endless and can give your local ranking a boost, as well as your online presence.

By using the above steps, you will be well on your way to increasing your social media rank and gaining momentum online. Make sure to research your niche and professionals with similar accounts. Use some tags that are general and others that are specific to your line of work. Maybe your target audience is families, use tags that adhere to that group and will catch attention. Assure the quality of your content. Users will judge a book by its cover- so make sure that make the correct assessment. Check posts for grammar and verbiage before posting. Lastly, don’t be afraid to localize your social media with snippets of what you do for the community and where you’re located. A short video of you walking from a local coffee shop to your office is an easy way to give directions and show support for other businesses in the area!
